Objective

Unwanted or uncontrolled fire is often the worst enemy of mankind because it can destroy physical assets (houses, buildings, factories, forests, etc) and can also potentially cause fatality. While the effect of global warming due to carbon dioxide emission identified as one of the damaging Greenhouse Gases (GHG), unwanted fire which also generates carbon dioxide is also detrimental to the environment.

Various stakeholders namely engineers, architects, developers, contractors, manufacturers and the Fire Rescue Department of Malaysia (FRDM) are now required to shoulder an additional responsibility of not only to protect physical assets and life but also the environment. In this respect additional effort should be put in place to prevent unwanted fires from occurring. Sprinkler system installation has been proven to be very reliable in controlling a fire situation. MS 1910:2006 Fixed Fire Fighting Systems – Automatic Sprinkler Systems – Design, Installation and Maintenance should be the key reference document for all stakeholders of new buildings whilst for existing buildings proper MAINTENANCE to ensure the effectiveness of the system is critical. The Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) 1984 is currently being revised to keep abreast of current developments and may include additional measures to reduce fire incidents or to mitigate fire losses. The Green Technology advocated by the government is also being adopted in industries to ensure lesser climatic impact in their manufacture and in the application.

Persatuan Insuran Am Malaysia (PIAM) under the Revised Fire Tariff provides premium discounts for installation of fire suppression systems and discounts of up to 70% is attainable if it has been incorporated in the design stage. Retrofitting to meet the PIAM discount guidelines may not be attractive.

Who Should Attend
