Synopsis

Southern Steel Mesh Sdn Bhd (SSM) is one of the leading mesh manufacturers in the ASEAN region. SSM produces quality mesh and other wire products.  SSM is a subsidiary of Southern Steel Berhad, which is listed on the main board of Bursa Malaysia. This technical talk is organized with the objective to share with fellow engineers, technical knowledge in the design & detailing of reinforced concrete slabs with welded mesh complying with Malaysian Standard MS 145, and also the latest updates on specifications and standards adopted in the construction industry. The ease and speed with which welded steel fabric can be handled and installed considerably reduces placing time and consequently reduces the cost of the installed reinforcement. Its ability to reduce construction time is also in line with our Government emphasis on Industrialized Building System (IBS) - prefabrication and automation - in order to solve the increasingly great shortage of construction workers in Malaysia. The following are the topics of presentation:

1. Design & Detailing of Slabs with Welded Steel Fabric (mesh) complying to MS 145: Welded Steel Fabric for the Reinforcement of Concrete. The wide range of wire sizes and spacing available makes it possible to furnish almost exactly the cross-sectional steel area required, hence allows more economical design solutions.

In the past, standard fabric types such as A10, B7, etc. has been commonly specified by engineers. However, with the recent developments towards greater capabilities of new generation fabric-making machines, SSM has introduced the innovative Engineered Mesh design such as Twin Wire Mesh, Special Configured Mesh, and Staggered Mesh etc.

2. Off-site “Cut and Bent” Reinforcement Steel Detailing to BS Standard and Solution. Off-site Pre-cut and Pre-bend Steel Reinforcement give many advantages:- controlled material wastage, pilferage and deterioration; improved scheduling; improved quality control particularly when bending to prescribed bending standards; and allows better planning of site logistic, etc.

Specification for scheduling and Dimensioning such as BS 4466, BS 8666 and MS 1438 will be discussed.
