Synopsis

In Malaysia, precast concrete structures have gained popularity when the government introduced the component based construction known as Industrialised Building Sytems (IBS).Since the precast concrete components are pre-fabricated, there are many possible methods of joining the loose components together. Subsequently, issues of pinned, semi-rigid and rigid connections; stability and integrity of frames would always be the main topics. This One-day Seminar addresses issues and methods of designing  precast concrete structures by highlighting the structural systems, connection systems, ties for structural integrity to ensure that the designed frames are  stable and robust.

This seminar allows Architects, Contractors and Precaster to gain understanding on the entire range of precast lifting and connecting systems available in the market. Lifting and Handling are of the utmost importance in planning the design and use of precast concrete. It is essential that all aspect of these operations are carefully considered and detailed at all times so that any subsequent activities can be carried out by others in the safest possible manner without risk of failure or accident.

About the Speakers
1.  Dr. Ahmad Baharuddin Abd. Rahman is an associate professor at the Faculty of Civil
Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, Johor. He obtained his Ph.D. from University
of Sheffiled, UK. Before joining UTM, he was a site engineer at Pernas Engineering Sdn. Bhd.
where he gained practical experiences in the construction of transmission line towers. As a
    lecturer he has been involved in the teaching of Structural Analysis, Structural Steelwork Design;
Analysis and Design of Structural System; Construction Technology and Design of Precast
Concrete Structures. His research interests are structural stability and non-linear numerical
methods related to multi-storey steel and precast concrete structures as well as transmission
towers. Currently, he is conducting research on the performance of connections for precast
concrete structures. The research is funded by CIDB to promote the use precast concrete
    structures in Malaysia.

2.  Mr. Zhang is managing director of J&P Building Systems Pte Ltd in Singapore. He got the
master degree in Civil Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan in 1996 and graduated from
Tianjin University, China in 1989. He worked as a civil & structural engineer for high-rise building,
facade and infrastructure projects in China, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Since 2000, he has
been working as a specialist to provide the solutions in lifting, fixing and connecting systems for
    precast, façade and construction industries.
