Synopsis

The size of the CAE market is huge and the prevailing culture of its users is one of dependence on the commercial vendors to provide everything. Expectations on their CAE tools among engineers are immensely high, namely the tools need to be simple to use, with minimal input, and yet extremely accurate; reasonably priced, and yet come standard complete with superb technical support.  More than 15 years after Linux was first introduced as free operating system for personal computers, free and open source software (FOSS) is blooming and beginning to make an inroad into the CAE market. If Linux is your operating system of choice, FOSS is inbuilt. FOSS based CAE tools live very well in many businesses and campuses. Even if you are still stuck in the non-free world of Windows, there is a very healthy collection of FOSS based CAE tools to tease and tempt many engineers. Although adoption of FOSS does not usually cost a lot of time and money but all too often many programs that seem easy to engineers developing them will take new users weeks to master - the very reason why many adopters find it very difficult to make this scalable to feed and shelter a growing engineering organization around FOSS alone. This talk is a confidence building exercise that will educate practicing engineers on the concept of FOSS and Linux's role as the bonding agent holding many FOSS based tools, as well as the commercial CAE tools in an engineering computing environment. This talk will also introduce engineers to a sample collection of all these tools.

He has also designed smaller, dedicated networks for a small selection of clients. He was the past Deputy Directory (Academic Computing) at the Centre for Information and Communication Technology, UTM. Currently he is teaching Computational Methods for Engineers at graduate level, and also Applied Numerical Methods and Programming for Engineers at under-graduate level at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UTM.
