Synopsis
Buildings and structures, whether of reinforced concrete or masonry, are subjected to service life degradations and will one day reach a point when they become unfit for use as per the original designed purpose. During their life spans, buildings and structures come under constant attack from the weather, atmospheric gases, and other aggressive agents. Billions of dollars are spent on interventions to repair damages and to provide added protection in order to extend their service life.
The presentation reviews actual case studies with the aim of providing Engineers an overview of solutions successfully applied in various rehabilitation projects to meet differing needs and objectives.
Biodata of Speakers:
Mr. Lim Kean Meng graduated with a Honours Degree in Civil Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1999. His first job upon graduation was a posting to the 1st Silicon Wafer Plant construction project in Kuching where he joined the team undertaking installation works on clean room special coatings. The two years spent in this project not only provided him with extensive experience in specialist flooring and coating works but also earned him valuable insight into construction site practice and project management.
This early part of his career set the foundations for his progression from Technical Service Engineer to his current dual role as Technical Service & Training Manager / Product Manager (Industrial Flooring) with Mapei Malaysia Sdn Bhd. In the course of providing technical support to his colleagues, he works closely with Consultants, Project Owners, Specialist Applicators and Contractors to help achieve good practice on site. His areas of expertise include Industrial Flooring, Waterproofing, Joint Sealing, Concrete Repair & Protection and Structural Strengthening. Other notable projects he has worked on include the Penchala Tunnel, Suria-KLCC Pedestrian Walkway Tunnel, Matrade Building Refurbishments, SMART Tunnel, MRR2 Repair & Strengthening Works, KLIA 2, LRT Extension works, KVMRT, Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project.

Mr. Hanson Foong graduated from University Malaya with an Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2006 and started his professional career as a R&D engineer in OYL Technology Sdn. Bhd. He gained his first experience in building refurbishment works when working at Cofreth (M) Sdn Bhd and his construction industry experience was further widened to cover sales and marketing functions during his service with Bluescope Lysaght (M) Sdn Bhd. Hanson joined MAPEI Malaysia in 2011 and today manages the company’s range of products for Concrete Repair, Protection and Structural Strengthening. He spearheads the company’s drive to provide innovative & cost effective solutions in the fields of rehabilitation and strengthening works for the building and construction industry and he has led the company’s participation in a number of projects such as the Bangunan Parliament, Batu Kawa Bridge in Kuching, SM Sains Miri, General Hospital KL, Institute of Medical Research Kuala Lumpur, Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka and St Mary’s Cathedral. Hanson Foong has previously served as a committee member of American Concrete Institute Kuala Lumpur Chapter.
