Date: Saturday, 13th April 2019
Venue: IEM (Southern Branch) Training Centre, 24-B Jalan Abiad, Taman Tebrau Jaya, Johor Bahru
Speaker: Ir. Assoc. Prof. Yahaya Ramli, Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing, UTHM

Synopsis

A lift or elevator system is a type of vertical transportation that moves people or goods between floors of a multi-storey buildings or any industrial related applications. Lifts are typically powered by electric motors that either drive traction cables and counterweight systems or pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical piston like a jack and combination with certain rope arrangements. There are many types and version of lift systems to be selected for wide range of applications including for special need or purpose. Installation and construction of lift systems is very crucial in order to guarantee proper and efficient operation of lift services. Registration and maintenance aspects as required by acts and standards must be strictly followed for safety and healthy aspects of any lift systems.

Installation and operation of lift system is subjected to the Factory and Machinery Act, 1967 (Act 139) and regulations together with some other standards. Thus, the understanding on lift fundamental, installation, selection and requirement of acts and regulations such as registration, maintenance and inspection, safety and competent person are important to ensure safe, efficient and reliable service of lift system for residential and office buildings, and in other related applications or special need. Information and exposure from this talk is useful for lift installer, building owner and facility maintenance and management personnel to secure the most reliable lift services.

The main objective of this technical talk course is to provide some fundamental and practical aspects of lift systems with regards to its installation, selection and maintenance for residential and office buildings. This talk will also introduce some basic guidelines, standard practice and requirement on registration of lift, operation and inspection as implemented by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH/JKKP), Malaysia to ensure safety and healthy, and efficient operation of lift systems for passenger and technical/serviceman. The objective of the talk is also to give a better understanding for our young engineers and practicing engineers to get some insight on the above topic.
