Synopsis

A Steam Boiler is defined as a closed vessel which uses heat and convert water into steam for a variety of application. In technical terms, as in under Act 139, Factories and Machinery Act, 1967, Section 3; Steam Boiler "means any closed vessel in which for any purpose steam is generated under pressure greater than atmospheric pressure, and includes any economizer used to heat water being fed to the vessel, and any superheater used for heating surface, and any pipes and fittings connected thereto". Most industries in Malaysia is using Steam Boiler in their operations. The main purposes of a steam boiler that industries used are for Power generation, Industrial process and Heating.

The scope of this talk will elaborate on Act 139 Factories and Machinery Act, 1967 and its regulations that related with the Steam Boilers. The talk will start with a general introduction to definition of Steam Boilers and categories of boilers follow by the design of a steam boiler based on international codes such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), British Standard or others recognized international standard and constructing of a steam boiler based on its essential fittings equipment’s as required in acts and regulations.

The talk will continue with steam boiler operations including Boiler Competencies recognized by DOSH (Steam Engine Driver and Steam Engineer), Standard Operations Procedure, SOP’s related to steam boiler, fuel system categories (solid fuel, liquid fuel and gaseous fuel), control system instruments (drum water level control, steam pressure control, fuel consumption control), quality of water treatment plant as well as its good functioning boiler equipment’s and fittings.

The objective of the talk is to give a better understanding on Steam Boilers Safety and Inspection for our young engineers and practicing engineers to get some insight on the Act 139 Factories and Machinery Act, 1967 etc. to upkeep on the knowledge of Steam Boiler system.
